"The General's Ballad" is a representative work of author Mo Yingfeng and an important work that won him the Mao Dun Literature Prize. Set against the backdrop of the Cultural Revolution, the novel primarily tells the story of a group of high-ranking military officers and their choices during a period of political turmoil.

The story takes place at an important naval and air force base in the south. The novel revolves around two veteran generals: Peng Qi, commander of the air force corps, and Chen Jingquan, political commissar. They were comrades-in-arms who fought side by side for a long time, but under the political circumstances of a special era, they not only faced external pressures but also gradually fell into a complex dilemma of interpersonal relationships and political stances.

The novel's main conflict lies between these veteran cadres and a group of figures represented by Jiang Zuizhang, the head of the propaganda department. Jiang Zuizhang skillfully utilizes the power of propaganda and mass movements, manipulating public opinion and organizing actions to suppress those with differing opinions.

In this environment, different people made different choices. Peng Qi, with his upright character, insisted on his own judgment and was therefore severely punished; Chen Jingquan, on the other hand, was relatively cautious, hoping to maintain stability and protect others, but was also misunderstood and impacted as a result. At the same time, some young people also went through a process of gradually becoming more clear-headed during the movement, moving from blind obedience to a more awakened perspective.

The novel depicts the chaotic situation of the time through a series of specific events, such as cases where people were labeled "counter-revolutionaries" for opposing resource waste, and the isolation, criticism, and even physical control of cadres. These elements contribute to the work's strong sense of realism.

In the end, as the situation changes, Peng Qi is taken to Beijing, while Chen Jingquan, who has been under immense pressure for a long time, collapses during the farewell. This ending reflects both the turning point in the situation and the physical and mental toll the characters have taken on their long-term repression.

"The General's Ballad" is not only a literary work exposing the turmoil of the Cultural Revolution, but also an epic about humanity, conscience, and the original aspiration of the revolution. It truthfully records that absurd period in which "bad people were in power and good people suffered," while also depicting the simplicity and perseverance that still existed in ordinary people, such as the conscience and responsibility shown by characters like Hu Liansheng and Zhao Kaifa.

It is worth mentioning that the author, Mo Yingfeng, noted at the end of the book that this work was written and repeatedly revised twice, in 1976 and 1979, at great personal risk. This creative background makes "The General's Ballad" not only a literary work, but also carries a heavy and authentic historical weight.

General's Chant by Mo Yingfeng depicts the fate of military leaders during the Cultural Revolution, focusing on human choices under political pressure.
